Where Not to Place TENS Pads: Safety Areas to Avoid

Learn the most important TENS pad placement safety rules, including areas to avoid and when to ask a healthcare professional first.

By NexMedio Editorial•April 26, 2026•Updated April 29, 2026

TENS should feel like a comfortable tingling sensation. Placement matters because some areas are more sensitive or inappropriate for electrical stimulation.

Areas to avoid

  • The front or sides of the neck, including the carotid artery area.
  • Across the chest or through the heart.
  • Directly over the spine, open wounds, irritated skin, or numb skin.
  • The head, face, eyes, mouth, or throat.
  • Areas with active swelling, infection, or unexplained pain.

Ask a clinician first if

  • You have a pacemaker, implanted electronic device, heart condition, epilepsy, or are pregnant.
  • You are recovering from surgery or have a diagnosed injury.
  • Your pain is new, severe, worsening, or associated with weakness or numbness.
